Strengths

  • Sub-$400 with a 28 mph rated top speed, Electric Skateboard HQ verified 24.6 mph and other testers hit 26-27, which nothing else at this price matches
  • Dual 500W through-axle hub motors with well-tuned Hobbywing-style speed modes; beginners can start gentle and grow into it
  • 18 lbs with a built-in carry handle, the easiest board here to live with in apartments, buses, and lecture halls
  • Meepo's decade of iteration shows: 8-ply Canadian maple deck, shredder trucks, and a 6-month warranty with UL2272 testing claimed
  • Almost permanently discounted; $399 against a $469 list at our June 2026 check

Weaknesses

  • The 144Wh battery is the price you pay, 11 miles claimed, and spirited riding cuts that meaningfully; reviewers unanimously flag range as the limiter
  • Hub motors transmit road texture; thin PU sleeves over motors ride harsher than belt-drive boards with full urethane wheels
  • 90mm 78A street wheels want smooth pavement, cracks and chip-seal get jarring
  • Budget remote and no app-level customization depth compared with Exway's ecosystem
  • No formal IP rating; wet streets are at your own risk

The Meepo V5 is the board reviewers reach for when someone asks how to try electric skateboarding without spending four figures. Meepo essentially invented the budget eskate segment, and the V5 is the distillation of that decade: dual 500W through-axle hub motors rated for 28 mph, an 8-ply Canadian maple deck, and a $399 street price that has held through years of competitors trying to undercut it. Independent testing keeps the claim honest, Electric Skateboard HQ measured 24.6 mph and ESkateHub’s testers ran 26-27, which is genuinely fast for the money, and frankly faster than most beginners should ride.

The tradeoff is printed right on the spec sheet: 144Wh of battery. Eleven claimed miles becomes seven or eight when ridden hard, which makes the V5 a campus-and-neighborhood machine rather than a cross-town commuter. Reviewers are unanimous that range is the one number where the price shows. The other place you feel the budget is the ride: hub motors mean thin urethane over steel, so rough pavement buzzes your feet more than a belt-drive board with full wheels would. On smooth asphalt it is perfectly pleasant; on chip-seal you will know.

What the V5 does unexpectedly well is beginner-proofing. The speed modes are conservatively tuned at the bottom, soft acceleration, gentle braking, and owners consistently describe growing through the modes over months without outgrowing the board. Eighteen pounds with a molded carry handle makes it the most portable board in this category, a real consideration if your ride ends at a bus stop or a fourth-floor walk-up.

The buying logic: if your trips are under five miles each way on decent pavement, the V5 is the obvious entry point and the value rating reflects it. If you need real range or rough-road comfort, the WowGo Pioneer 4 adds a 345Wh pack for about $100 more, and the belt-drive Backfire Zealot S3 is the step up in ride quality, both covered separately in this category.
